Veterans Day is quickly approaching, and all of us here at MilitaryConnection.com join a grateful nation in saying thank you to the men and women of our armed forces who serve, past and present. We also acknowledge and appreciate the many sacrifices of their families and friends. In this newsletter, we have featured a number of free benefits that are being offered to Active Duty Military, Veterans and their families. (See below)

Also, I recently had the opportunity to participate on a White House Briefing Call addressing Veterans. The discussion was about HR 3219, the Veterans Benefits Act of 2010 that was recently passed by Congress and signed into law by the President. The bill covers many areas including:

  • Protects soldiers who are deployed or moved from having to pay an early termination fee (such as for a cell phone) and on residential leases
  • Reauthorizes an expired VA work-study program for veterans
  • VA will be verifying their database of Veteran and Service Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Businesses
  • Authorizes $10 million more for dedicated services for homeless women Veterans and homeless Veterans with children
  • Allows 100% disabled Veterans to receive free SGLI insurance coverage for two years
  • Increases the auto allowance for disabled Veterans
  • Allows parents whose child died on active duty to also be buried in a national cemetery if the deceased veteran was not survived by a spouse or children
  • Instructs the Institute of Medicine to carry out a review of best treatment practices for chronic multi-symptom Gulf War Veterans

I also want to congratulate the Veterans Administration on their new television ads to reach Veterans about the benefits they have earned. I am happy to report that the Post 9/11 GI Bill is working, and below are some recent statistics that are impressive:

  • Over 600,000 Veterans are enrolled in the Post 9/11 GI Bill (began August, 2009)
  • The VA has paid out over $5.76 Billion to Veterans and Schools
  • 98 percent of the payments have been processed to date

Please check out the extensive area of MilitaryConnection.com for Education and Post 9/11 GI Bill information.

DEADLINE DEC. 3, 2010

Retroactive Stop Loss Special Pay

Are you entitled to the Stop-Loss bonus?

Time is running out to apply for retroactive bonus pay for 145,000 military personnel who were forced to remain on duty beyond their original discharge date, following the September 11th attacks. Congress has approved back pay of $500 for each month of involuntary service; the average lump-sum due is between $3,500 and $3,800. Applications must be submitted by December 3, 2010. The DoD is desperately trying to track down about 90,000 veterans. Congress ordered the military to dole out back pay to those affected by the policy dating to 2001. There are some exceptions. Soldiers who accepted re-enlistment bonuses, for instance, are ineligible. So far, the military had processed about 55,000 applications and approved $210 million in back pay, leaving $324 million left unclaimed. Submit your application online at www.defense.gov/stoploss.

Free Meals for Military and Veterans

McCormick & Schmick's. For the 11th year in a row, the 87 locations in 25 states are offering free entrees to veterans on Sunday, Nov. 7th. The chain also requests military ID and highly recommends reservations. The promotion is on Sunday instead of Veterans Day, "because it allows vets to bring their families who might not be available during the week," CEO Bill Freeman says.

Golden Corral is offering free buffet meals - including beverage and dessert - to current military and veterans on Monday, Nov. 16, from 5 to 9 p.m. No military ID is required for its ninth annual Military Appreciation Monday, according to Dolly Mercer, national events manager. The event is held on this date, she says, "so we don't interfere with Veterans Day activities."

Applebee's is offering a free entree on Wednesday to veterans and all active-duty military from 11 a.m. to midnight at all 1,900 locations. Although Applebee's requests some kind of military ID, "We're not going to argue with folks who might forget to bring it," says Sam Rothschild, senior vice president of operations.

Krispy Kreme Doughnut Corporation is offering free doughnuts to all Veterans and active military personnel. Just visit any participating Krispy Kreme to redeem your free doughnuts. No identification required but keep it available anyway.
